Chemical pallet
The nine chemical pallets CP1 to CP9 have sides between 760 and 1,300 mm and are 138 mm (CP1 to CP5) or 156 mm (CP6 to CP9) high. CP1 is 1,200 × 1,000 mm, CP2 is 1,200 × 800 mm and CP3, CP8 and CP9 are 1,140 × 1,140 mm. The specification gives no weight or rated load.
| Type | Length | Width | Height | Typical load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CP1 | 1,200 mm | 1,000 mm | 138 mm | Sacks, cartons, flexible bulk packaging |
| CP2 | 1,200 mm | 800 mm | 138 mm | Cartons, fibre drums, canisters |
| CP3 | 1,140 mm | 1,140 mm | 138 mm | Drums, flexible bulk packaging, octabins |
| CP4 | 1,300 mm | 1,100 mm | 138 mm | Sacks |
| CP5 | 1,140 mm | 760 mm | 138 mm | Cartons |
| CP6 | 1,200 mm | 1,000 mm | 156 mm | Sacks |
| CP7 | 1,300 mm | 1,100 mm | 156 mm | Sacks |
| CP8 | 1,140 mm | 1,140 mm | 156 mm | Octabins with bottom outlet |
| CP9 | 1,140 mm | 1,140 mm | 156 mm | Drums, flexible bulk packaging, octabins |
Length is the longer side. Heights are 138 mm for CP1 to CP5 and 156 mm for CP6 to CP9.
The specification gives no weight or rated load for CP pallets.
The VCI/APME specification gives no empty weight for CP pallets, so none is listed here. Ask the pallet maker for the weight of the pallet you buy. The rated load is not a fixed number. The specification says it depends on the pallet type, the load and how the pallet is used, and it tests racking, the most demanding case: after 24 hours the pallet may deflect by 12 to 19 mm, depending on the type, which is half the average breaking load. Ask the maker for the rating.
Two chemical-industry associations, the German VCI and the European plastics association APME, defined the nine formats in the early 1990s. CP1 to CP5 are skid pallets and CP6 to CP9 frame pallets. CP3, CP8 and CP9 measure 1,140 × 1,140 mm, which suits sea containers, and are called container pallets. EPAL also issues quality-assured EPAL CP pallets to the same specification.
There is no single count: it depends on the CP type and the unit's inner size. CP3, CP8 and CP9 at 1,140 × 1,140 mm are the formats made for sea containers. Enter your pallet size in the container loading calculator to see how many fit.

CP3, CP8 and CP9 are 1,140 × 1,140 mm, a footprint chosen for sea containers, so they are called container pallets. CP3 is a skid pallet for drums and octabins. CP8 and CP9 are frame pallets, CP8 for octabins with a bottom outlet and CP9 for drums, flexible bulk packaging and octabins.
